Circus Starr are so excited to collaborate with Joanna Grace of The Sensory Projects to create The Circus Starr Sensory Story and pack.
We know we can bring so much joy to the lives of disadvantaged children through the magical art of circus, but we also know that the thought of coming to our show can be quite daunting for those who are sensitive to sensory changes.
With this in mind we wanted to help prepare families for our show through their senses, so we created The Circus Starr Sensory Story!
Joanna Grace is a specialist in sensory accessibility. She has produced our story that goes through the journey of coming to our show, noting the likes of light changes and the sweet smell of popcorn.
She explains how we’re going the extra mile to make our show as accessible as possible.
“Everyone thinks about ramps and lifts but few places think about sensory accessibility: Circus Starr’s Sensory Story can help those challenged by sensory differences to access the vibrant and rich sensory experiences on offer at the circus. It is a fabulous piece of sensory accessibility and a lot of fun to boot!
In May we went to Plymouth to meet Joanna and the lovely Rosa! Whilst there we created this video that provides further information on our sensory story.
Our previous experience with sensory stories taught us that they are a new concept for many families out there. Knowing this we wanted to make it easy as possible for families to share our story.
So, we created two free ways for people to access The Circus Starr Sensory Story, with both offering supporting guidance on the storytelling.
The first option is to download it from our website which provides a digital copy of the story.
The second option is to order our pack to be sent out in the post. This contains our story and the supporting resources needed for the storytelling – from tickets to super sparkly material!
The response we have received from offering this additional support for our show has been amazing!
Both options have proven popular with our audience members, and we have even had interest in our digital copy from a special school in Australia!
We can’t wait for our Autumn tour to begin so that we can see how much the sensory story has helped our audience members prepare for their magical trip to Circus Starr.
